This past weekend we got a break from winter and had a lovely, sunny day. So I took advantage of it and took a drive around the Smyrna DE countryside to see what I might come across. What I stumbled upon was this wonderful abandoned church and cemetery.
Directly behind the last row of headstones is a small swamp, which I’m told is called a “Carolina Bay”, which according to Wikipedia, are elliptical depressions concentrated along the Atlantic seaboard within coastal Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and north central Florida. . There are a lot of swampy areas in Delaware because it is a low lying state that sits on a peninsula, so there’s lots of water everywhere. Having the swamp right behind the cemetery definitely adds to the atmosphere!
